Dear Ms. Roberts,
I‘m writing because I wondered if you might be interested in reviewing my book, 50 Activities for the First Day of School, on your blog. Your blog has been such a great resource for me as a teacher and a materials writer. I revisit quite frequently your webinar on designing effective classroom materials. I would be very grateful if you felt that my book was worth a mention.
The book is a short collection of icebreakers and rapport builders that I use on the first day of class, or even in the middle of the semester to build rapport and check in with students.
It really came to me as a thing I needed to do a couple of years ago, when I told my students, “OK, let’s play a fun game called “Two Truths and a Lie,” only to have the class groan. Turned out every teacher that day had done that game as an icebreaker and I was teacher #5! That’s when I first started writing down my first day activities and categorizing them by their purpose.
50 Activities for the First Day of School may be the only collection of first day activities that is targeted for ELT teachers. It’s also the only one that goes beyond icebreakers to look at fun ways to introduce the rules, or do creative needs analysis. I’ve also tried to target novice and expert teachers by including clear instructions and a lot of variations. You’ll recognize a lot of old classics here but often with different variations and very clearly adapted to be used in the classroom.
You can find some more information on the book, including a preview on my publisher’s site: http://www.alphabetpublishing.xyz/book/first-day-of-school/ and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if there’s anything else you’d like to know.
If you would be interested in writing a review, please let me know and I’ll get an EPUB or paperback book out to you!
Best,
Walton
